Culture

In Gili Trawangan, visitors can see the demonstration of a traditional martial arts named peresean or stick fighting that is usually displayed around the art market.

Peresean is a battle between two men armed with rattan cane (called penjalin) and a thick and hard buffalo skin shield (called ende). This tradition is done by the people of Sasak tribe, Lombok, West of Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Peresean pertained to dance art from Lombok area. Fighters in Peresean are usually called pepadu and umpires are called pakembar.
